Recent ‘Batman’ Movies Are Too ‘Dark’ for Former Caped Crusader Adam West
The new Batman films are too dark, according to former TV caped crusader Adam West. The veteran actor portrayed the comic book superhero in the iconic 1960s Batman TV series, and he reprised the role for 1966’s Batman: The Movie and countless other animated TV shows and video games.
But he is not a fan of the characters played on the big screen by Christian Bale and Ben Affleck in the past decade, insisting their caped crusaders are too brooding and complicated. “In the new movies, Batman is very full of vengeance and has deep-seated angst and so on…” he told fans at New York Comic-Con while promoting his new animated film Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders. “They’re very dark.” West is hoping Affleck will add a little light relief when he returns as Batman for a stand-alone film he is directing and starring in, adding, “Enough of the violence. Let the costume work for you. And put a little humor into it. “I think it’s about time to relieve all of that kind of attitude of vengeance and, ‘I can’t take it anymore, I’m going home and I’m going to suck my thumb.’ ”
