‘Bourne’ Shoot Shuts Down Las Vegas Strip
Residents of Las Vegas have been dealing with traffic jams after filming on Matt Damon’s new Bourne blockbuster shut down the city’s famous Strip. The Hollywood actor is reprising his role as secret agent Jason Bourne for a new installment in the action franchise, and he has been filming scenes in Sin City this month.
It has now emerged the movie crew took over the Las Vegas Strip this week, closing roads to film an action-packed car chase sequence and even relighting the neon signs of defunct casino The Riviera for the shoot. Officials of the City of Las Vegas confirmed the news and explained the traffic jams to locals in a statement posted on Twitter, writing, “#vegastraffic heads up if you’re on The Strip this week. Delays are not fun but awesome that they’re filming here!” Footage posted online also shows a car driving off a raised platform outside a hotel on the Strip, plunging over a moving vehicle on a roadway beneath and landing in a large pile of cardboard boxes. Guests at hotels on the Strip received letters telling them about the traffic problems and explaining they may hear “loud noises” or “simulated gunfire” during filming. The note, which has been published on Twitter, reveals local emergency services were made aware of the fake gun fights. Eric Price, director of the Nevada Film Office, defended the road closures and insisted the film shoot has brought jobs and revenue to the city. “It creates jobs. It creates economic development for local vendors, local businesses. And, it creates exposure on the big and the small screen,” he said. “If you see Las Vegas in a film 20 years ago, and you see Las Vegas in a film now, it is a totally different place than it used to be. And that benefits us to keep the film productions to keep coming back year after year.” The actor starred in three Bourne films, but sat out the fourth installment, The Bourne Legacy. He has returned to the series for the currently untitled fifth film, which is slated for release later this year.
