This week, thousands of pieces of exclusive Star Wars art were published, some never before seen outside of the Lucasfilm archives.
This concept art was drawn by Ralph McQuarrie – famed for creating the designs behind Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO – decades ago and features characters, creatures, landscapes and architecture at their early development stages. Some designs never used in the original Star Wars are being used in the films today, including recent hit blockbuster The Force Awakens, the current TV series Star Wars Rebels and the upcoming movie Rogue One.
Released on September 27, Stars Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie shows readers never-before-seen illustrations of Star Wars, before Star Wars was the pop culture phenomenon it is today. The 800-page, two-volume set by Abrams Books is McQuarrie’s “most definitive collection,” packed with over 2,000 pieces of concept art from one of pop culture’s greatest.
Yahoo Movies was able to get some exclusive insiders and images from the book, which was created collectively by Wade Lageose, Brandon Alinger (author of Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy), and David Mandel (an Emmy-winning writer-producer for Saturday Night Live, Seinfeld, and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and current Veep showrunner).
“One could say that the Star Wars universe derives its look from the mind, and wrist, of Ralph McQuarrie,” said Lageose.
