Fear not, you are still a Scorpio… maybe.

Rumors recently spread that NASA changed the dates in accordance with people’s zodiac signs, as well as adding another new sign, but the space agency came forward to clear things up and remind us the difference between astrology and astronomy.

First, the rumor spawned from a U.K. Cosmopolitan writer who found this article on a children’s website by NASA which read that there are 13 constellations as opposed to the believed 12.

Ophiuchus is the 13th constellation that was apparently “left out” by the Babylonians over 3,000 years ago because 12 signs over 12 months in the year just sounded better to them. As good as pizza, cut into 12 even slices.

This information, which isn’t new and was published and updated this past January, lead to the spread of this updated zodiac sign and date chart which included the new sign and its 18-days-a-year-alignment with the sun:

  • Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 to Dec. 17
  • Sagittarius: Dec. 17 to Jan. 20
  • Capricorn: Jan. 20 to Feb. 16
  • Aquarius: Feb. 16 to March 11
  • Pisces: March 11 to April 18
  • Aries: April 18 to May 13
  • Taurus: May 13 to June 21
  • Gemini: June 21 to July 20
  • Cancer: July 20 to Aug. 10
  • Leo: Aug. 10 to Sept. 16
  • Virgo: Sept. 16 to Oct. 30
  • Libra: Oct. 30 to Nov. 23
  • Scorpio: Nov. 23 to Nov. 29

Additionally, it was told that Ophiuchus, which means “serpent-bearer,” defines its sign-holders born between November 29 and December 17 as “spirited, magnetic, impulsive, clever, flamboyant, and at times jealous, power-hungry, and temperamental.” These kinds of people “want to heal the world of all ills and bring everyone closer together” and also have the only sign based on an actual human being.

After much talk, as seen on social media, buzzed about for days, NASA confirmed the non-news as fake.

“We didn’t change any zodiac signs,” they said. “We just did the math.”

What they mean is that tidbit of information back in January was astronomy, defined as the branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole, not astrology, which is defined as the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world.

Also, the sky is not the same as it was three millennia ago and the Earth’s axis is no longer pointing in the same direction.

In conclusion, Zodiac signs are not told or changed by NASA and astrology was never scientifically accurate to begin with.

So if you are a Gemini and recently were tricked into thinking you were actually a Cancer, truth is, you might actually be a Pisces.
