Taylor Swift Fires Back at Kanye West in Album of the Year Grammy Speech
It may seem like Taylor Swift is always flitting about with her squad, but at the Grammy Awards last night, the superstar had an important message to impart. Just days after Kayne West rapped about the “Bad Blood” singer in his new song, “Famous,” Swift shared a passionate message about female empowerment in her acceptance speech for Album of the Year, 1989.
In a new song off his The Life of Pablo record, West raps, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.” Well, Swift had something to say about that. In her acceptance speech Monday night, Swift subtly (or maybe not-so-subtly) addressed West’s lyrics. “And as the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame,” said Swift. “But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday, when you get where you are going, you will look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment.” After the content of his lyrics exploded over the Internet, West stated he’d spoken to Swift, who took it all in stride. But according to her publicist, that’s not the case. “Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single “Famous” on her Twitter account,” Swift’s representative told the press. “She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that bitch famous.’” It will probably be easy for West to figure out where Swift stands on his lyrics now.
